Daylight Harvesting and Lighting Automation in Commercial Warehouses

Warehouse lighting can consume energy when areas are empty or when daylight is already providing useful illumination. A useful control strategy combines occupancy, operating schedules and measured daylight so fittings are not running at full output without a reason.

What daylight harvesting does

Daylight harvesting uses light-level sensors and dimmable lighting zones to reduce artificial lighting when natural light is sufficient. The lighting should adjust slowly enough that people do not notice it hunting up and down. Good control logic gradually adjusts output and maintains a suitable minimum level for the task.

Zone the warehouse around real conditions

Perimeter areas, skylight zones, loading areas, aisles, offices and enclosed rooms experience different daylight and occupancy patterns. Separate control zones allow each part of the building to respond appropriately instead of applying one setting to the entire warehouse.

Combine occupancy and scheduling carefully

Occupancy sensors can reduce lighting in unused areas, while schedules provide predictable operating periods. Appropriate time delays, minimum levels and manual override provisions help keep the system practical and safe. Emergency lighting and any operationally critical areas must remain coordinated with the wider design.

Select compatible fittings and controls

The luminaires, drivers, sensors and control protocol need to work together across the full dimming range. Control panels, gateways and networked devices should remain accessible for maintenance. The specification should also consider what happens if a sensor or communications link fails.

Measure and commission the result

Sensor positions, dimming ranges, time delays and control thresholds must be tested under representative conditions. Commissioning confirms that the system responds as intended without compromising visibility, safety or everyday operation. Energy data can then help the operator refine schedules and identify unexpected use.

Keep operation understandable

Facility teams need clear control descriptions, schedules, zoning information and override instructions. If the facilities team cannot understand the zones, schedules or overrides, the controls will eventually be bypassed.
